Swift News: Swift 6.2, New Era of Swift, Foundation Models, Dark Side of iOS Dev & More.

October 8th, 2025

๐Ÿ‘‹ It's been a few weeks since the last edition of Swift News and that's because I was in the iOS 26 release crunch with my apps and course updates.

Speaking of course updates, I've completed my biggest update ever with the Portfolio Project course (SwiftUI, HealthKit, Swift Charts, Source Control). I've added 10 new videos updating the app for Liquid Glass and adding an AI fitness coach feature using Foundation Models.

๐Ÿฅณ It's on sale now for 30% off until October 14th. Get it here.

โ€‹Swift 6.2 Releasedโ€‹

Now that iOS 26 and Xcode 26 are officially released, that means Swift 6.2 is official as well. The update that will impact the most projects is Swift Concurrency is more approachable with the option to have your app be Single-Threaded by default, and then you get to choose when to introduce concurrency. I recommend checking out Paul Hudson's What's New in Swift 6.2 article as well.

โ€‹A New Era of iOS Devโ€‹

This article from Danny perfectly captures what I've been feeling lately. We are at the dawn of a new era for our work. Swift 6 Concurrency, Liquid Glass, Widgets, Snippets, App Intents, Foundation Models. iOS Dev is changing (as it always is), but this feels like the start of a new chapter.

โ€‹Dark Side of iOS Devโ€‹

Not everyone loves all these changes tho. This article discusses some issues with iOS development and why many are quitting (are they?). I disagreed with a lot in this article, so check out the video version of Swift News if you're curious to hear my throughts on the article.

โ€‹Foundation Model App Inspirationโ€‹

I think Foundation Models are a big deal. Of course, it's no where near as powerful as server-based models, but there are huge advantages to having an offline, private, on-device LLM in your pocket. This article from Apple showcases a few apps and how they are using Foundation Models. Check it out. Get some ideas for how you can use them in your app.

โ€‹Widgetsmith 5 Years Laterโ€‹

This might be the first instance of a Tik Tok blowing up an app and changing a developer's life. For those that are new here, this is a fun story and for those that have been around for a while, this is a fun trip down memory lane.

โ€‹

๐ŸŽ‰ To celebrate the iOS 26 course update, all my courses and source code are 30% off until October 14th.

Till next time,

August 11th, 2025 Swift News - Video Version - Get my thoughts on the articles below. Forget MVVM in SwiftUI Looks like it's time for the annual MVVM in SwiftUI debate. Personally, I've moved on from MVVM in my apps a couple years ago so I tend to agree with this articles line of thinking. At the same time... I think arguing about architecture on the internet is a giant waste of time. But, I wanted to share this article for those that may only know MVVM and have never considered another way....
